An outstanding teacher, a visionary of global proportion
and an emerging leader in his field, Mike Slattery is Director of the
Institute for Environmental Studies at Texas Christian University (TCU)
in Fort Worth. A well-respected example and champion of multi-disciplinary
study, Mike's goal is to create a new generation of emerging leaders
- marked by its ability to understand, innovate, and exemplify effective
and ethical stewardship of our environment.
The Institute plays an exemplary role at TCU - a University recognized
for its global perspective and emphasis on leadership development. As
its mission, TCU educates individuals to think and act as ethical leaders
and responsible citizens in the global community.
Mike has been instrumental in the founding of the Institute. His own
wealth of experience and ability to grasp other disciplines has positioned
him as a critic of Western Society's limited mode of addressing environmental
issues. Mike advocates going beyond the standard combination of pure
science and economics, to find solutions that involve well-informed
ethical, aesthetic, and cultural perspectives.
Originally from South Africa, Mike is an internationally-trained physical
geographer with an Army background - his Ph.D. is from Oxford, his Masters
is from the University of Toronto and his Bachelor's from the University
of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. He has written more than 60 popular
and professional journal articles, and has worked in diverse landscapes
ranging from the Namib Desert in southern Africa, the Isle of Skye in
Scotland, and the cloud forests of Costa Rica.
Mike Slattery lives with his family outside Fort Worth.
